Opal Tap On and Tap Off Release 3 (2020)

This dataset provides counts of tap ons and tap offs made on the Opal ticketing system during four non-consecutive weeks in 2020. The Opal tap on and tap off dataset contains 16 CSV files covering four weeks (28 days) of Opal data across the four public transport modes.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/dataset/opal-tap-on-and-tap-off-release-3-2020

This dataset in the locations by date file contains some special bus locations such as “Fish Markets MLR(153)”,
“Camperdown Park(237)”.

  1. Are these data points to provide additional information than to the postcode totals? i.e Can I assume that the postcode entry counts passengers tapping on/off in that area - e.g. (bus, 2042)?

  2. Some names like Fish Markets are clear but others like “News Ltd(198)” are ambiguous, Is there are data file that gives more information on what stops / routes are counted for each of these stops?

  3. Why are there no entries for the major locations like Bondi Junction Interchange? or Parramatta Interchange?

Hi,

  1. We provide bus data in postcode “bins” except for the following postcodes 2000, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2037, 2038, and 2050 where we bin the bus stop locations by travel zones.
  2. Please refer to the GIS files available in https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/dataset/travel-zones-2016. There is also a Transit Stop Number to Travel Zone mapping table in this dataset.
  3. There are entries for Bondi Junction Station and Parramatta Station.
