Open Data Traffic Volume

Hi Team,
We are trying to use Open Data Traffic Volume and identified some data is missing. Analytics team has conducted an investigation using the available CSV files from Open Data as of 03-02-2025. Below are the key observations:

  1. Road_traffic_counts_hourly_permanent (combined csvs): data updated on TfNSW - January 30, 2025
  • There are 532 permanent stations appeared in data from 2006 to 2021 but from 2022 to 2024, 307 stations found to be missing. Below summary is the summary of missing data:
    Top LGA’s missing: Wollongong (18), Blacktown (15), Hornsby(15), Newcastle(14), Lake Macquarie(13), Parramatta(13)
Device missing the most: Trafficorder Loop Counter (203)
  • 129 station_keys (out of 661) did not map with station_id from reference table
  • Dates missing records from 2006, 2019, and 2022.
  1. road_traffic_counts_yearly_summary.csv: from data last updated - January 27, 2025
  • There are total 1,918 station_key/id which are more then the records in road_traffic_counts_station_reference.csv
  • Total 1,783 records with same number of station_key and station_id in the road_traffic_counts_station_reference.csv

Furthermore, If we can get support in providing response on the below queries:

  1. what is best way to calculate the traffic volume by year using below datasets:
  • Road_traffic_counts_station_reference.csv
  • road_traffic_counts_yearly_summary.csv
  1. what is the method to derive yearly summary of traffic volume from road_traffic_counts_hourly_permanent (combined csv) dataset to match road_traffic_counts_yearly_summary.csv

Thanks

Hi @Shah,

apologies for the delayed response. In response to the data quality side we have the following information from Transport:

Transport is aware that the availability of Traffic Volume datasets has been experiencing issues in recent times. There is an initiative underway to rebuild this service, however this is an extensive task, and a timeline for completion has not yet been set. Transport will endeavour to provide updates on progress of this initiative when they become available.

I’ll get back to you regarding Q3 & Q4 shortly.
