What data do you want?

Hi @yvonne.lee,

We work closely with the NSW government and stakeholders developing around train lines throughout NSW. Would it be possible to get historical rail tag reader info (passenger and freight) across the entire NSW network? This would help us more accurately assess things like rail noise exposure in these areas.

Cheers,
Ben

Thank Ben for this query. Weā€™ll try and find out. Are you able to provide any more information about what a ā€œhistorical rail tag readerā€ is? so we can ask the right teams?

Hi Yvonne,

Iā€™m told that various signals across the network are equipped with these tag readers. They record information ( some stored in the tag) of the passing train. This information can be deciphered to determine the type of train (passenger, freight, etc), operator (Sydney Trains, Pacific National, etc), time of passing, etc. Itā€™s a bit like an etag for trains. There is also a train location system (TLS) that is used across the metro network. Iā€™m not sure if this has been extended into regional areas. Data may also be available from this.

Whilst I understand that we wouldnā€™t necessarily get access to this info in real time (for security reasons), we are interested in historical logs (for example last few months, even the previous week would be useful).

Maybe the groups responsible for signalling at Sydney Trains, ARTC, and John Holland Rail would be helpful?

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Trackside equipment in the regional areas would be managed by either John Holland or ARTC. If you are wanting vehicle positions the best is to get the real time vehicle position feed (GTFS-realtime). For the regional network we only have data around for passenger vehicles.

Thanks for the query!

Regards
Yvonne

Would it be possible to get opal tap on/ tap off data for the bus routes in Western Sydney? Ideally they would show the number of people who use the service and also the bus stops where most passengers board or alight. Thank you!

Hi @f.waqar. Thank you for requesting data. Due to privacy restrictions, we cannot show information on this granular level. However, if you havenā€™t already, you can check out the tap on/off data we do have available:

Is there a more recent release of Opal tap on/off data than 2016? Would appreciate another release to see trends in station use since then.

Hi @Qantas94Heavy. Currently, the 2016 Opal tap on/off data is the most recent one available. We have requested more recent Opal data.
