Opal Fares

In Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter and the Illawarra area, fares are calculated based on the distance travelled from tap on to tap off, payment method, the mode of transport, concession eligibility (or free travel) and any Opal benefits such as discounts and capped fares that apply.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/dataset/opal-fares

Will this be available in GTFS fare_attributes.txt and fare_rules.txt ?

Hi @jayen - unfortunately not.
We are unable to ‘fit’ Opal fare rules into the GTFS specifications and include it in them.

Has TfNSW made a proposal to extend the spec? I see the IC Card in Japan has proposed a new field ic_price in fare_attributes.txt.

Thanks Jayen, we don’t have an extension proposal at this stage. We’ll take a look at this.

Noticed a potential issue with the Fare Values data for Stockton Ferry. The data indicates there is an off-peak fare, however, the existing Trip Planner API and fare table on the transportnsw.info only lists one fare type (no off peak).

Thanks @jxeeno , we’ll feed this back to the project team. @lmuntyan ^^

Hi jxeeno, the table published on Open Data has correct values, make sure to look at October-2023 tab:

Also, it is correct in Trip Planner:

Hey @lmuntyan,

Thanks. The old Trip Planner API calculator is returning peak fares only whereas the new fare calculator not available on Open Data is returning peak and off-peak fares.

To clarify and confirm, my understanding:

  • the old Trip Planner API fare calculations were incorrect (they always returned peak fares)
  • the fare table on transportnsw.info is incorrect (it only lists peak fares under the “Ferry fares” accordian)
  • the Open Data tables in this dataset are correct (it includes peak and off peak fares)
  • the new fare calculator on transportnsw.info is correct (it returns peak and off peak fares)

Is that right?

Thanks!

Hi Ken,
Yes, confirming your understanding. Please note that the bullet point #2 will be fixed.

Larisa
