Speed Zones

Hello,

The school zones data available on Open Data is based on each school, and I believe this was requested by a specific group within the TfNSW cluster.

However, in some instances, a single school zone (ID) may cover one or more schools (one-to-many relationship). In such cases, the school zone ID will be the same for those schools.

On the other hand, our actual speed zone data, which is also available on Open Data, does not contain any duplicate zone IDs.
Users can download the speed zone data and apply a filter with zone_type = school to export the school zone data without duplicates.

Let me know if you need more information.

Hi. Would it be possible for the Speed Zones dataset (e.g SHP format) to include identifiers for each feature? I notice that the Historic Zone Line Layer includes an ObjectID and a SZ_ZONE_ID for each feature. Could this be added to the Speed Zones dataset? Two main use cases for the identifiers would be to be able to detect updated features when a new version of the dataset is published, and to help with the reporting of data errors, as the specific feature/object could be referenced.

Hello! Thank you for your suggestion! I will pass this request on to the Data Owner for their thoughts.

Will get back to you

Hi. I’ve noticed some issues with the School Speed Zone information:

  • Non-trivial inaccuracies in positioning data (i.e. well outside the tolerance of consumer GPS receivers)
  • School zones that don’t exist/have never existed
  • Polygons that don’t conform to GeoJSON standard (the poorly-named ā€œright hand ruleā€)
  • Incorrect school naming (i.e. the school named is not served or even near the school zone in question)

(I’m not treating the many-to-many relationship between schools and school zones as an error.)

Are the data custodians interested in any information/feedback about data quality issues to investigate and resolve?

Thanks

Tim

Hi Tim,

Yes, the Data Owners do regularly review and update any incorrect information found in Speed zones and school speed zone data.

Please send issues to ā€œOpen Data Helpā€ - apigateway.support@transport.nsw.gov.au
and we’ll forward on to them.

Cheers,
Marcela
