Bike sheds are enclosed shared shelters where you can store your bicycle out of the weather, free of charge. They accommodate between 20 and 50 bicycles, depending on requirements at the bike shed location. You don't have to pre-book a space. To gain entry to a bike shed, just link your Opal card and accept the Bike shed terms and conditions. Please note, spaces cannot be guaranteed inside a shed as they are provided on a first in first served basis.
Thanks Larisa. I’m just looking into the dataset and found the updated data is for Jan 2023 - Jul 2023. There is a large gap between the last data 2020-21 to Jan 2023. Is it possible to retrieve the data in between as well? I’m carrying out an analysis for Customer Experience team and Active Transport team to estimate usage and potential demand.
We are pleased to share that the latest bike shed usage dataset has just been uploaded to the open data portal. This covers occupancy and utilisation trends across the Sydney metro bike shed network up to April 2026 (the 2025 data files have also been aggregated for historical analysis).
For those interested in active transport, urban planning or infrastructure development, this updated information provides valuable insights, including:
Average daily and weekly occupancy rates for each bike shed location
Peak usage periods and changes in demand over time
Comparative analysis of occupancy levels between different bike shed facilities
Understanding these trends is crucial for informing decisions around future investments in the bike shed network. Where should we look to expand capacity to meet growing commuter needs? How can we optimise the distribution of bike shed facilities across the city?
The data is available for download on the open data portal. I encourage everyone in the open data community to access, analyse and share your findings. Your insights could help shape more sustainable and user-focused active transport solutions for Sydney.
As always, we welcome your feedback on the dataset and how it could be improved or built upon. Please reach out if you have any questions.
